// This was what we bought in the very first week of the experiment, our weekly shops at ALDI (plus our local butcher) still comes with in our £30 to £40…. we’ve actually had a few weeks at under £28. Obviously every few weeks or so we need to stock up on basics and so we’ll use all of that £40 budget. Below is our original page post with what we spent in that first shop and the cost comparison to some well known stores.//
We sat down and worked out how much we (two adults, two 5-16s and one under 5) would get on rations.
We started with good old http://www.mysupermarket.com/, which we had used regularly in the past to do our online grocery shopping.
We started with good old http://www.mysupermarket.com/, which we had used regularly in the past to do our online grocery shopping.
The total cost of our grocery shop minus vegetables/ fruit (which would be bought fresh daily) is…
- Tescos = £58, 7
- Asda = £61, 27
- Sainsburys = £66, 93
- Ocado = £70, 62
- Waitrose = £73, 15
At the time we added the items to the ‘trolley’ Tescos was the cheapest but items change regularly
At Aldi on Tuesday we bought our rations, vegetables, toiletries and washing powder (same items in the tescos trolley) and paid a whopping (sarcasm) £27.29… thats a £31, 42 difference…. more than enough to buy that shop all over again.
Just to remind you of what we got for our money heres my shopping list:
- Fresh whole milk
- raisins
- brussel sprouts
- carrots
- cabbage
- 500g margerine
- washing powder
- baby wipes
- minced beef 500g
- chicken 500g
- toilet tissue
- sugar 1.5kg white
- brown sugar 500g
- orange concentrate
- 4 tins of baked beans
- 500g lard
- 250g salted butter
- 250g cheese
- small 250g jar of jam (to last the week)
- 250g ham
- 250g bacon
- 6 eggs
- honey (before we found out honey is part of the preserve ration)
- a bock of chocolate as an occational treat (which makes up part of the family sweet ration)
- 1.5 kg flour x2
It doesnt look like that much, but imagine paying Waitrose’s £73.15 for it. (difference of £45.86)
Some really nice and useful information on this website, as well I conceive the style has great features.
I would learn more with this topic in case the info presented have been as interesting as what you have written on this page. Don’t stop caring about the content you’re writing.
My spouse and I totally love your weblog and discover practically all of your post’s to be exactly what I’m searching for. Does 1 offer guest writers to write content for you personally? I wouldn’t mind creating a post or elaborating on a great deal of the subjects you write with regards to here. Once more, awesome weblog!
Nope, its just me and MrC who run the blog at the moment and write up the posts. Guests posts are something we haven’t really thought about yet, but, are a possibility in the future.
I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own weblog and was curious what all is needed to get setup? I’m assuming having a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny? I’m not very internet smart so I’m not 100% positive. Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers
No real set up at all. It only costs us £17.99 on wordpress each year. The joy of wordpress is that its easy to navigate and makes setting up a blog fairly easy to do.
Keep up the superb work, I read few articles on this website and I think that your web blog is rattling interesting and contains lots of great information.
Wonderful post, where did you receive your reference material? or are these your own findings?
I suppose a bit of both … we’ve previously shopped at all these places so we know more or less how much a shop cost in the bigger supermarkets and how little it cost in the budget stores.
It wasnt too difficult to get the exact prices of the website http://www.mysupermarket.com/ and compare those prices with our grocery receipts.
This is absolutely gold. I did not expect that I’d get so much out of reading your write up! You’ve just got yourself a returning visitor
love it!
This blog rocks – keep doing this so well!
I love the efforts you have put in this, thank you for all the great posts.
